HCG NCHRI conducts its first successful Bone Marrow Transplant procedure in Nagpur

Raipur, 1st Febuary 2019: Health Care Global – Nagpur Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (HCG – NCHRI) treated its first patient diagnosed with aggressive multiple myeloma through Bone Marrow Transplant procedure. Initially diagnosed in June 2018, the 63-year old underwent several cycles of chemotherapy before it was decided by the team of specialists to proceed with a stem cell transplant. The patient responded well to the transplant and is currently doing fine
The 9-bedded Bone marrow transplant Program of HCG NCHRI is the largest in Central India. It is equipped with HEPA filters and positive pressure ventilation to keep the environment microorganism free, which in turn ensures decrease in infections which are the main causes of morbidity and mortality.
Dr. Nishad Dhakate, Consultant - Haematologist and BMT physician, HCG NCHRI said, “Stem cell transplant is an extremely complicated procedure and keeping infections at bay once it is done is very key as even the slightest infection could put the patient at risk. The hematopoietic stem cells are self- renewable and can form the entire blood and immune system of an individual. Firstly, the stem cells are collected from the peripheral blood, now-a-days after giving subcutaneous injections to mobilize the stem cells from the bone marrow into the blood. Then, patients are treated with high dose chemotherapy before transfusing the stem cells. These stem cells are given intravenously, which is called as stem cell infusion. This does not involve any kind of surgery. The stem cells travel through the bloodstream and end up in the bone marrow. Here they start making new normal blood cells. This entire process takes approximately 2 -4 weeks.
The first case treated for Myeloma (a type of Blood cancer) underwent transplant at HCG NCHRI ,was discharged and is doing fine. The second bone marrow transplant was done for a 15 year old boy with Lymphoma (a type of Blood cancer), is under close observation at present.”
Patient (who doesn’t wish to disclose personal details) said, “Having been detected with this blood cancer type, initially I was reluctant to travel , leaving my family and my home for the treatment far away from my hometown. While we were still contemplating on the place of treatment, my family read about HCG NCHRI in the newspaper and we decided to consult with the doctors there. Post proper examination of my condition, the doctors suggested undergoing BMT procedure. While I am in constant touch with my doctors for any unusual issue, I am recovering steadily in presence of my close ones at home in Nagpur.”
Bone marrow transplant is a challenging procedure which plays a curative role in the treatment of Leukemias, Lymphomas and Bone marrow failure disorders.
