Lifestyle has a crucial role to play in IVF says Dr Nalini Madhariya
Raipur, 29th February 2020 : As per ‘The World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision’ report1, it is estimated that the fertility rate of Indians (measured as the number of children born to a woman), has reduced by more than 50%, from 4.97 during the 1975-80 period to 2.3 for the current period of 2015-20. On top of that, the report projects that the rate will go down further to 2.1 by 2025-30.
A roundtable was conducted in the city today to understand the reasons behind the same and prospects to improve the success rate of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), a prominent assisted pregnancy technique used widely today.
Delayed pregnancy or inability to conceive naturally has come up to become a huge challenge faced by couples today. Multiple factors are known to contribute to this including lifestyle, maternal age, body weight, diet and a lethargic physical activity. Research2 has shown that an unhealthy lifestyle has a larger role to play in the rate of conception in an IVF procedure as well. Intake3,4 of unhealthy food caffeine, alcohol and smoking have been some of the aspects that have a severe impact on assisted pregnancies.
Healthy3,4 diet on the other hand has been found to be positively impacting success rate of IVF outcomes. Secondly, exercises and physical activeness also has variable effect on the fertility treatments. All these factors however can be controlled with the help of focused advise from medical experts. “People need to take their lifestyle seriously as it significantly impacts pregnancy. Continuous interest and engagement in working towards this common goal to attain a pregnancy is important for both partners and the doctor to achieve success. Couples undergo several emotions when they prepare for, start, and complete an IVF cycle. Anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty are common as the couples make a substantial financial and physical investment for a chance at getting pregnant. “Women worry a lot about infertility, and it has been scientifically proved that stress has a direct relation with the rate of infertility faced by couples today. While it is a silent struggle, there are huge chances to significantly improve the success rate of an IVF treatment in the first attempt itself. For this, couples need to remain dedicated and focus on managing critical aspects such as optimum weight, healthy diet and lifestyle, adequate levels of vitamin D in the body and absolutely no stress”, added Dr Nalini.
Natural conception is ideal but considering all the factors mentioned above, assisted pregnancies have emerged to be a common phenomenon in current times. There is enough emphasis on prognostic factors associated with IVF such as female age, diagnosis and ovarian reserve etc, very little is known about patient-oriented lifestyles that influences the outcome in a big way.
