Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel and Industry minister praised local industry for donating PET bottles recycling machine to raise awareness about recycling
Raipur, 10th February 2020 : To raise awareness about PET bottles’ recycling and dissuade citizens from littering, the local industry has donated a PET bottles Reverse Vending Machine during the ongoing Chamber Expo Avsar at BTI ground. PET bottle is the highest recycled plastic in India, with a recycling rate of 90%. The RVM machine which can collect up to 2500 bottles in a day, will be later placed in the Chamber of Commerce and Industries
The recyclers will turn these bottles into flakes/granules to prepare textile thread to produce T-shirts, athletic shoes, luggage, upholstery and sweaters; fiberfill for sleeping bags and winter coats; industrial strapping, sheet and film; automotive parts, such as luggage racks, headliners, fuse boxes, bumpers, grilles, door panels etc.
“We have taken loans to purchase manufacturing machines after seeing the growing demand for PET in liquor packaging. But, a year back local government banned the use of PET for liquor packaging, which have drastically affected the local businesses and jobs. We request the govt to support the domestic industry and remove the ban. PET is used by various local industries and we are collectively preparing an ecosystem to ensure 100% collection and recycling of PET bottles. A person can earn between 25-35rs per Kilogram of PET bottles, which in itself is a huge business opportunity for building the local recycling industry. I urge the citizens of Chhattisgarh to reduce their dependency of packaging and reuse & recycle as much as possible.” Said Mr. Shankar Bajaj, Director – Khyati Industries, Raipur.
PET is the highest recycled packaging material in India, in comparison to alternatives like glass bottles (45%) and Tetrapack (40%). PET bottles are preferred by various local industries since it is lightweight, eco friendly and inexpensive.
Local industry to place more RVMs machines and 100plus garbage bins across the city in the next few months. According to the NCL – CSIR study, the rate of PET recycling in India is far higher than developed countries like USA, Japan, Europe, China etc. It is found to completely safe by a recent study conducted by the government research organization Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) and backed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for being a suitable packaging material for Water, Milk & Milk products, Oils, Fruits & Vegetables, Sweets, Cereals, Meat products, Fish products, Spices, and other beverages.
