This ambitious initiative is being carried forward by Tata Steel along with Department of
Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Jharkhand. The women who have been selected belong to
174 villages of Saraikella Block including Partollas. The training, a residential one, will be
completed in six rounds for each of the ladies.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Majhi, District Malaria Officer, Saraikella, by lighting
of the ceremonial lamp. Also present on the occasion were Mr Biren R Bhuta, Chief, Corporate
Sustainability Services, Tata Steel and others.
Key components of HBNC to be administered by Sahiyas include:
• assessment, and if necessary, management of asphyxia by following an algorithm, and
using bag and mask
• initiation of early and exclusive breast feeding, and supporting/teaching mother to
breastfeed
• vitamin K injection on the day of birth
• thermal care of the newborn
• assessment of the newborn for high-risk status and provision of extra care
• repeated home visits during the neonatal period to ensure breast feeding, thermal care,
hygiene, cord care, eye care, skin care, and to monitor the newborn for infection
• early diagnosis and treatment of neonates with sepsis, including administration two
antibiotics (oral cotrimoxazole and injection gentamicin)
• identification and home-based care of low birth weight and preterm babies
• referral when necessary
Programme curriculum will include capacity building of Sahiyyas in home-based health care
using SEARCH training manual and trainers.
About Project MANSI
Project MANSI is a four year programme supported by American India Foundation, the Hans
Foundation and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Govt. of Jharkhand with Technical
support from SEARCH, Gadchiroli. It is presently operational in 174 villages of Saraikella
Block of Saraikella-Kharswan district of Jharkhand from December, 2009 to November, 2013.
The Project is funded by American India Foundation and supported by Department of Health
& Family Welfare, Government of Jharkhand.
